In keeping with my homemade Christmas, I thought I would share a easy and inexpensive way to make a a sweet natural garland out of dried apples and oranges. It is easy as pie…actually much easier. This is a fun project to share with your littles or gather some friends and spend the afternoon making hand-made lovely Christmas goodies. I will be sharing some more ideas before Christmas so stay tuned!
The supply list for the Dried Fruit Garland is simple…you probably have everything you need already…
- A few apples and oranges
- A can of 7-up or lemon juice – if using lemon juice add a bit of water to the juice. I used about 4 tablespoons of juice added to about 1/2 cup of water. (If you are using citrus fruits you don’t have to do this step.)
- Twine or string
- A large dull tapestry needle or as many as you need to keep all those hands busy.
- Measuring tape and scissors.
Of course you start by drying your fruit. I would do that a day or two before I want to work on the garland. Slice fruit into thin slices, about 1/8″ each. Don’t panic… this is not an exact science! Leave in the seeds.
Place your fruit into the 7up or lemon juice (not necessary for citrus fruits). This trick helps the fruit not to turn brown during the drying. Just make sure the fruit is covered with the mixture. Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees. Place the fruit onto a cookie sheet and place in oven… for about 8 hours. Turn your fruit over about half way into the drying process. You want the fruit to be leathery, not hard. If you try to rush the drying the fruit will burn… Also using a dehydrator can cause the fruit to curl up. You don’t want that.
When your fruit is dry it is time to make your garland. Measure the window that you are going to string your garland across. Cut the twine twice as long as you want your garland to be. If your twine is very thin I would double your twine.
Using a large dull needle string it all together, or make each piece of fruit a little ornament.
Hang in a sunny window or on a fireplace mantel or wherever you like. Your home will smell delightful. Enjoy!
