What if the secret to happiness wasn’t a secret at all?
What if it wasn’t elusive or difficult or reserved for certain people or certain circumstances or certain ‘adversity free’ times in our lives?
What if soul-deep happiness, contentment, and peace could exist right alongside other feelings…even feelings like sadness or disappointment or frustration? and even while you are honoring those very real feelings?
Because research has revealed a revolutionary fact: grateful people are happy people.
It’s not the same backwards…it’s not ‘happy people are grateful people’…the gratitude comes FIRST. And the gratitude we’re talking about has nothing to do with things or money or status or lack of adversity or anything like that.
Research shows that simply having a grateful heart produces happiness, regardless of what else we are dealing with at the time.
It seems like an impossibility, but it’s really not…not if by happiness we are talking about a deep feeling of okay-ness…the knowledge that even though there are always struggles and hard things and adversities…that we are going to be okay. And that there is always always always something to be grateful for…not tomorrow or someday when there are no problems to face…but right now, today.
If today we want to be happier, then today let’s find things to be grateful for. Here’s a start: we have another day of life. We just took another breath. We are connected by the wonder of the internet so that we can even have this discussion together right now. Now look around and find a few more things to be grateful for. Write them down. Speak your gratitude. Keep noticing and practicing until the choice to be grateful becomes a habit.
From your gratitude, happiness will begin to flow.
