An artsy trash can??? Why not?

Hi, friends! We are in the middle of making BIG changes to our Clubhouse, and we have lots of blog posts planned to show you some of the projects we have planned, as well finally showing you the details on some of the fun and funky things we already have there! I thought we’d start by showing you the ORIGINAL artsy trashcan that Melody made out of a bucket and paint and scraps. We now have trash cans like this scattered all around the Clubhouse and WE LOVE THEM!! I thought it might be fun on this grey February day to bring out this post again and think about making things that are full of COLOR and FUN and FUNKY-NESS…all out of stuff we have laying around the house!

If you make your own Artsy Trash Can, send me a photo at kathy@bravegirlsclub.com…we’ll do a blog post about them. Won’t that be fun?!?!

So, the first thing you gotta do is ask your man….any man in your life will do (EDITED***all you girlfriends who have YOUR OWN BUCKETS…ROCK ON!!! Use YOUR BUCKETS!! Sometimes the chicks have the buckets instead of the dudes, or we both have buckets…or NONE of us have buckets so we gotta get ‘em at Home Depot…this is an equal bucket-owner blog :) )…..just go and ask….”hey, do you have a 5 gallon bucket you are not using?” It’s your choice whether or not you tell them that you are going to paint and decoupage all over it, it’s your choice whether you tell them whether they will ever get it back or not. I chose to just ask….and I got this old, used one…..so, I didn’t feel so bad when I completely changed it from it’s manly form…..

Ok…next, I took it from it’s home in the garage and said…”Bucket…..I love you!” It’s important to build trust, and I wouldn’t have said it unless I meant it. Then said “bucket, you are going to stay here in this beautiful studio with me now….you are going to be a lovely receptacle for the stuff that I just can’t find a way to repurpose….you are going to be the prettiest trash can, ever”  Then, I swear I heard the bucket say “Well, that’s waaaayyyyyy better than holding soapy, dirty water or rusty nails…” and so I said…”yes, bucket…yes it is…” So we began….

Now that everything was cool with the bucket, I just went for it……now, if you are gonna make one of these…just know that you can do it with whatever fabric and paper you choose….you don’t have to make it all colorful and wild like I did. I am not the boss of you, no one is!!! So….do it however YOU want to do it….but, here’s how I did it…I chose paper and fabrics that I loved and cut them into big ol’ random scallops, freehand….cuz that’s just what I do. Then…THEN THEN THEN, I got the paint out….have I told you lately how much I LOOOOOVE paint? I always find myself smiling the goofiest, hugest grin when I am painting…..it’s kind of embarassing, but I can’t stop. Anyway…I chose some more colors that I love, and I just went for it….painting 4 big stripes around the bucket. The bucket LOOOOOVED this part. But, as you can see, I was not careful or meticulous, I did not measure……but you can if you want to….you really can….

Next, I had to do the part that is very hardest for  me, always…..I had to wait for the paint to dry. Have I told you lately how much I DEEEEEETEEEESSSSSSSST waiting for paint to dry? Well, I do.

Oh, what did I do while I waited for the paint to dry,  you ask? Well, thank you so much for asking!!! Actually….I played my guitar….(learned a new song and everything)…AAAND, I watched Titanic. For reals.

Can I tell you for a second just how much I love my new studio? I CAN NOT WAIT to do the studio tour here on the blog in a few weeks when I am done with THE CRAZIEST TRAVEL SCHEDULE known to man. I love love love my studio…I think you might just love it too!

Ok…MOVING ON….next, I got out my bottle of happiness….Mod Podge…and started “podging” on the scallops (stole that word from Amy at Mod Podge Rocks) This is the part that is so fun because I just slather it on, and it’s so messy and fun and freeing….

When I was finished (and you can see that I did not Mod Podge any scallops over the painted part…..because I painted it SO that you could see the color through it) anyway, when I was finished, it looked like THIS:

then, guess what I had to do AGAIN, dang it? I had to wait for the Mod Podge to dry!!! Ok, I know that inquiring minds want to know….and I am here to please….so here’s what I did while I waited for the “Podge” to dry…..I hung out with one of my little men…he’s the one that will just sit and watch me for hours…..help me with stuff….and every so often ask questions like “Hey, does dad know you are doing that to his bucket?”

and…by this time….legally blonde was on…and seriously, you are totally lying if you tell me you don’t like that movie. It’s ok if you never tell anyone that you do, because it is kind of embarrassing to admit…but you like it and you know it. I mean…who can resist this Brave Girl? She reminds me of my friend, Kat…….I totally love everything about her.

I recently told someone that I am not a t.v. person, I think I fibbed. My husband hooked up a t.v. in my studio for me, and I must say….during late night deadlines, it is quite enjoyable.

OK….on we go….NEXT, (and I must admit that I did not wait until the M.P. was all the way dry) I scripted some words on in black paint….just because I love words….they are my favorite art supply :)

and then I decided that I wanted to fancy up the totally banged-up little plastic handle….so I grabbed some embroidery floss, put a little dab of hot glue, and started wrapping it round and round and round….

THEN, guess what???? It was done!!!! It did need to dry a little longer….so I played another few songs on my gee-tar…..

And then I introduced my happy little bucket to it’s new home….right under my favorite work table……I know it will be very very very happy here. Hope you have fun making one…if you do, send me a photo!!! I would love to see! Have fun!

Not your Mom’s Cake Pops…Krispy Pops!

I’ve kinda been fascinated by the Cake Pop craze (an original invention of the amazing Bakerella) which has spread throughout the UNIVERSE in the past few years. They’re cute, but smooshed up cake and frosting rolled into a ball? All those beautiful, piped icing decorations?? Fabulous!…but not for me and my schedule.

So here’s my version…let’s call it the Krispy Pop…think soft Rice Krispy Treats wrapped around a ROLO, rolled into a ball, stuck on a stick, dipped in white chocolate and sprinkles…what could be bad about that?!?

Brave Girls Club - Krispy Pops

I made these as a Thanksgiving dessert for the little ones, and they were a huge hit! Okay, full disclosure — I did sneek a couple of these addictive little morsels myself late on Thanksgiving night, and they beat the leftover pie all to pieces. Success…boo-yah!

This is a super duper fun project to do with kids. Here’s how:

You’ll need a bag of marshmallows,  1/4 C butter (don’t you dare use margarine), vanilla, Rice Krispies, a bag of white chocolate coating wafers,  20 unwrapped Rollos,and 20 sucker sticks.

You’ll also need a LOT of sprinkles. These are the cute ones I used for Thanksgiving…I ended up using 2 full jars of sprinkles for 20 Krispy Pops.

Make a batch of Rice Krispy treats using the recipe on the cereal box or the bag of marshmallows. The secret here is DON’T OVERCOOK them…melt the butter and marshmallows only until they’re melted. In fact, take them off the heat before they’re completely melted and stir stir stir until they’re mixed, then add the Rice Krispies. This will keep your treats chewy and soft instead of so hard they break your teeth. PS. I always add 1 tsp vanilla to the butter/marshmallows.

Scoop up about 1/3 cup….

…and wrap around a Rolo.

Shape into a ball with the Rolo in the center. Roll in your hands until it’s a smooth as possible — it’ll still be bumpy but who cares, right? (Spray your hands with Pam to keep it from sticking.)

Stick it on a sucker stick…make sure the stick goes into the Rolo. This will help it all stay put. It’s already cute!

Repeat with the rest of the Rolos and sticks.  I stuck them in a Styrofoam block to keep them out of trouble while I worked.

I had this much left over…not saying what I did with it.

Melt the white chocolate coating wafers…I used a tall narrow glass and the microwave. Instructions will be on the package.

Dip the Krispy Pops in the melted white coating…tap on the side of the glass to get the excess off.

Immediately roll it in sprinkles.

They’ll harden at room temperature in just a little while.

That’s all there is to it. Now find some little kids to share with, and have fun!!

Love, Kathy

After School Snacks with PIZAZZ

When I was a kid I always loved/dreaded the beginning of another school year…I loved seeing my friends, I dreaded homework and deadlines, somewhere inside me I loved having a routine again, but I dreaded waking up before the sun.  To this day I long to buy school supplies, a backpack and new clothes in the fall.  I don’t know what’s so exciting about crayons, pencils, Elmer’s glue all organized in a little pencil pouch arranged just right next to a homemade lunch in a backpack.  But somewhere in all the school supplies and even homework there is the magic of being a kid.

It’s that time again for kids all over – time to head back to school…I’m sure there are kids out there who feel like I do…the bittersweetness of returning to school.  Well…last year, we met someone named Candi Gershon who showed us how to put school on closer to the sweet side.  I can’t imagine a bad day would keep going if you came home to something like this:

{Cherrypillar}

{Made using cherries stuck together with cream cheese.
Use chocolate decorator’s icing for the eyes.  Serve with lettuce. }

Or this:

{Banana Sushi Rolls}

{Flatten a slice of wheat bread, cover it in peanut butter and roll it around a banana.
Slice like sushi and drizzle with honey.}

Kyle (8) and Kailyn (6) are the lucky children of Candi Gershon (contributing editor for Better Homes & Gardens Scrapbooks Etc) who come home to snacks like this every day!  Candi got the idea when her son’s grades started slipping.  She knew she had to do something about it, so she invented “Gershon Unplugged Hours” – 2 hours after school – no video games, no computer, just homework and the rules go for Candi too.  You know how CRAZY we are over here about Unplugged Hours!!!  We loved this idea.

Here’s what Candi said about it:

If they were willing to invest their time so would I.  So, I shut off the computer during those hours and did not take calls.  I started making a special snack to motivate them when they came home and then we would all sit at the table and work on homework together.  The snacks were to lure them into this new “Gershon Unplugged” time…no computers, no video games, just homework.  I am happy to say it worked!  My son started getting A’s again and I could see my time investment made a huge impact on their time investment.  Now they start asking about what the snack is as soon as they get in the car from school.

Candi says the best part about making these snacks has definitely been her kids’ reaction.  They get so excited about it.  One day my son said…

What mother wouldn’t love to hear she is creating a new tradition that will be passed on to future generations? Melted my heart.

Sounds like something we’d all LOVE to hear!  Have fun surprising your kids with these snacks, and since they’re going to love them, you’re going to need more recipes!  Here they are:

{Cereal Initials}

{Use pipe cleaners to form your child’s initial,
give them a bowl of cereal and let them munch while they create…then eat it up after}

{Arthur}

{Use bologna and Mini Babybel cheese to make Arthur. Tomato rind for the mouth.}

{Banana Octopus}

{Banana cut in half (leave peel on and in tact, cut to resemble octopus)…served with goldfish.
I used yogurt covered raisins attached with peanut butter for the eyes.}

About the amazing & talented Candi Gershon:

{Tell us about yourself!}
I am a Contributing Editor for Better Homes and Gardens Scrapbooks etc. magazine.  I write and manage articles and I also do scrapbook layouts for the magazine.  When I’m not doing that, I sell ink and toner for a company called Supplies Now.  I use so much ink printing my pictures at home, I thought I better get in the business!  It’s a great fit for me.  I have also done some freelance work for paper companies or other Better Homes and Gardens titles on the side as well…I love the creative outlet.

When I came up with this snack concept, I asked my mother for help thinking up snacks.  She was a tremendous creative resource and loves to send me the cute ideas she comes up with.  She lives in Florida and I am in Texas, so this snack thing truly brought us together despite the miles and continues to do so.  I hope someday to collaborate with her more on future creative endevors.  She is the one who made me the creative thinker I am today and it is exciting to now share that passion with her.

{If you had one whole day all to yourself,  how would you spend it?}
I would start the day at the gym, then have breakfast and coffee with a friend, and then spend the afternoon with a glass of wine, soft music, and a massage….the combination of those three things sends me straight to heaven.  If there was time left over for a pedicure, that would be perfection.

{What does it mean to you to be BRAVE?}
To me, being brave is having the courage to make decisions based on your innermost thoughts, hopes, wishes, and dreams.  To let your inner self guide you.  It’s easy to turn off those voices and forge forward into the normal routine.  It takes a lot more courage to stop and listen and take action in the direction you want to go.  I am a firm believer in following dreams and the whole concept of “thoughts become things”.

We hope you LOVE these ideas as much as we did!!  (Thanks again Candi!)

The kind of childhood I want for my children….

So….just about 90 days ago I quit Facebook, I limited my texting time and my email time….I took my email app off of my phone. I decided to do a social media detox…you can read about my decision here if you would like to know more about my reasons. I decided to do this for 90 days…essentially for the summer………..

Now..what I want you to know is that it was one of the hardest things I have ever done…at first….until I opened my eyes and looked around at everything I had been missing while my eyes were glued to a screen, big or small. So much is happening that is real, 3-D, alive….so so so much.

Believe me, I have a lot more to write about my social media fast…..but we are leaving for a family vacation in a few days where there will be no internet or phone service…..when I get back, I have a lot to share with you about what I believe after waking up and seeing my life for what it is…with no interruptions, no outside voices and no distractions. There is so much I want to tell you, and so many things I want to beg you to do…

But first, I want to share a few photos I found on my camera of a random fun day at Grammie & Granndad’s farm this summer……my boys making forts with their cousins…I took photos of all sorts of these kinds of events this summer………I lived life through my eyes and my heart instead of through a screen……and it has changed me forever. So many incredible things happened this summer…some I will share, some I’m gonna keep in my heart.

This is the kind of childhood I want my kids to have…….and I have to be a good example. I want them to feel things with their hands and see things with their own eyes and experience things with their whole soul and heart…..I want them to feel free and happy and use their imaginations and make wonderful real and lasting relationships, face to face……….so, I gotta do the same…….and I have been, and it has been absolutely amazing. Nothing fancy…just simple simple simple beautiful living, breathing, thinking, resting, creating…….being. Being with myself and being with others, but mostly…just being…..

We are still these kids inside….ya know? We still want to climb trees and build forts and make up games……….just in different ways. I hope you will take some time as the summer draws to a close to let yourself be free……….

“If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.

Tom Stoppard

“It’s never too late to have a happy childhood”

Tom Robbins

“Our whole life is but a greater and longer childhood”

Benjamin Franklin

“There comes a time in every rightly constructed boy’s life that he has

a raging desire to go somewhere and dig for hidden treasure”

Mark Twain

“Blessed be childhood, which brings down something of heaven

into the midst of our rough earthliness.”

Henri Frederic Amiel

Happy Summer, my friends…….be on the lookout this weekend for my new melodyross website, updated blog, and a happy little makeover for our lovely Brave Girls Club website (a whole new website is being built right now, but it’s gonna be a while….and it will be worth the wait!) And…when I get back….lots and lots and lots to share.

summertime

If you’ve been to Brave Girl Camp, then you’ve met my mom, Myrna Jean, and you know what she’s like.  She’s 75 years old, sweet, serving, kind and never seems to run out of energy (if she does, she doesn’t let on to it).  There’s a running joke in our family that she can out work my dad and any of her kids, grandkids AND great-grandkids.  She’s a hard worker.

At our July Brave Girl Camp, my mom suffered a minor stroke.  Before you worry – don’t – she’s okay.  BUT she has had to slow down a LOT, which is hard for her.  She almost never asks for help, even when we wish she would.  This week, though, she asked for help stacking some wood.  It’s funny that she would consider doing it herself…unless you know her…then it’s not surprising at all.

We showed up and there was a giant pile of wood waiting to be stacked and yet another pile waiting to be chopped….so we stacked what we could…

While the little kids helped….unless they got distracted by the toys and the swings and the chickens and the trampoline…then they did kid stuff…

Tucker and Luke (Kathy’s son and son-in-law) worked on the pile that still needed chopped while we were stacking…

I once heard that work isn’t work unless you’d rather be somewhere else.  I think we all felt the same…it was awesome to be there together…didn’t feel like work at all…

When we were all done, my dad got his lawn mower out and hooked up the trailer.  The trailer he’s been towing grandkids around in for years and years and years…

My nieces, Kallie and Chelsea, who were there have especially tender feelings about these pictures, since their grandpa used to pull them around….and now he’s pulling their kids around.

And as it got dark, and we ran out of work, we ended up just talking…my dad unloaded the grandkids, loaded up a bunch of lawn chairs instead and brought them out to us while my mom made everyone rootbeer floats.

And we watched summer magic happen…

It was dark before any of us thought about going home…we were having such a good time we didn’t even notice.

Summertime with the family….doesn’t get much better than that!  Hope you’re finding some of this goodness, too!!

Four little words that will change your life…

I’m. Not. Kidding.

I’m going to share with you a secret phrase that will change your life, your marriage, your relationship with your kids, maybe even your relationship with your boss or co-workers!

You will be so thankful to know this secret that you might come to my house and shower me with home-made cookies and flowers…(actually, I REALLY love chocolate cake…so if you’re going to bring something, bring that.)

Here’s the deal, my brave friends…we women have an uncanny talent for keeping an internal catalog of all things… At any given time I’ll bet you could give me a good idea of where your daughter’s library book is, or where your hunky husband’s favorite baseball cap is, or where your teenager’s ipod is, or where your boss’s oh-so-important spreadsheet is…

Admit it.

And if you’re like me, it makes you NUTS because everyone KNOWS that you have this uncanny talent, and so you are like the family ‘Google’…everyone comes to you FIRST to find whatever it is they’re missing. Am I right??!

Knowing that we love our hunky husbands and our children and so on, we WANT to be helpful, but let’s admit that it can be slightly irritating to be asked countless times a day where this is, or where that is, and have you seen my?….

Here comes the secret….when said sweetly and with a nice smile, these four words will change your life…

This sounds NOTHING like ‘find it yourself’ or ‘do I look like I have time to find your stuff?’ or ‘if you would just keep your room clean you wouldn’t lose things!’. Instead, it sounds to their ears like, ‘I am oh-so-happy to help you find your lost whatever…just tell me where you’ve looked and I’ll put my day on hold while I find it for you.’

When I started answering my hunky husband with these simple little words, magic happened. He would immediately turn around with a puzzled look on his face as if he were thinking…”Hmmmmmm…where HAVE I looked? Where did I put that?….) and I would never hear about it again. Somehow, magically, mysteriously, he was able to find whatever little lost thing he was looking for WITHOUT MY HELP.

AND because I said it sweetly and lovingly and with a smile, he had no idea what I was really up to.

I’ve been using these magnificent little words for years now, and I’ve found that they work equal magic on all ages of people. As time goes on, they even start to look for things BEFORE they ask me! (Can you imagine?)

And guess what?

If they really have given it a diligent try and looked everywhere they possibly can, I am more than happy to help out. After all, I am a woman with that incredible feminine talent…

Chances are, I’ll know right where it is.

Change your life….try it.

Love  you sooooooo much,
Kathy

A Brave Girl Camp Favorite–Lemon Blossoms!

A few years ago, we had a family BBQ and someone brought these tart, tiny, summery “Lemon Blossoms” to share. Lives were changed that day. Ever since then, we have all been making (and enjoying) these little gems every chance we get.

These bite sized beauties have joined us at many Brave Girl Camps, always becoming a quick favorite. We think they are perfect for any occasion. They have a few steps and make a bit of a mess out of a kitchen, but we think they are totally worth it.

Start out by gathering your ingredients. I usually have most of these items on hand, so they are easy to throw together. (Somehow, I left butter out the picture–but it’s a MUST.)

Here is the complete list of ingredients:

Muffins:
18 1/2-ounce package yellow cake mix
3 1/2-ounce package instant lemon pudding mix
4 large eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil

Glaze:
4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1 lemon, zested
3 tablespoons melted butter
3 tablespoons water

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and prepare a mini muffin  tin with cooking spray. Mix together the cake mix, pudding mix, eggs & oil. It will make a pretty thick, glossy batter.

Fill your muffin tins about 2/3 full and bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

In the meantime, prepare the glaze by combining the powdered sugar, butter, water, lemon juice & lemon zest. Set aside.
Once muffins are done, cool in the pan for 2-3 minutes, then turn them out onto a towel. Flip them right side up and allow to cool for a couple more minutes.

While they are still warm, dip them in the glaze, covering them completley. Place on a wire rack to cool & dry completley.

Try not to snatch them right off the cooling rack just yet. Once the glaze dries, it transforms these ordinary little muffins into a lemony-glazed-donut-type-of-treat that you will just adore. I can promise you that.

Once they are all set and ready for thier big debut, plate them up and share them with someone you love!

I hope you love them as much as we do!

LEMON BLOSSOMS
(Modified from a recipe by Paula Deen)
Ingredients:
18 1/2-ounce package yellow cake mix
3 1/2-ounce package instant lemon pudding mix
4 large eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
Glaze:
4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1 lemon, zested
3 tablespoons melted butter
3 tablespoons water

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Spray miniature muffin tins with vegetable oil cooking spray. Combine the cake mix, pudding mix, eggs and oil and blend well with an electric mixer until smooth, about 2 minutes. Pour a small amount of batter, filling each muffin tin half way. Bake for 12 minutes. Turn out onto a tea towel
To make the glaze, sift the sugar into a mixing bowl. Add the lemon juice, zest, oil, and 3 tablespoons water. Mix with a spoon until smooth.
With fingers, dip the cupcakes into the glaze while they’re still warm, covering as much of the cake as possible, or spoon the glaze over the warm cupcakes, turning them to completely coat. Place on wire racks with waxed paper underneath to catch any drips. Let the glaze set thoroughly, about 1 hour, before storing in containers with tight-fitting lids.

Fun Family Weekend at BGC!

What an AWESOME summer!!!  Brave Girls Club has been busy – we just finished up Soul Restoration 2, and will be starting Soul Restoration 1 again at the end of the month.

AND in case you haven’t heard, we have not ONE, but TWO Brave Girl Camps happening this month.  Last week, we hosted 22 phenomenal women and this week we are enjoying the company of Mothers and Daughters of all ages at our first ever Mother/Daughter Brave Girl Camp.  It has been soooo incredible to get to know these women and to see miracles happen in their lives.

Aaaaaaaand as if all of that weren’t enough, we ALSO got to invite our families to come up and spend the weekend between camps with us.  It was the first time any of our kids have seen where we spend 4 weeks a year.  It was surreal to have our husbands and kids up there….we loved it and wanted to show you what it was like….

{HIKING}

{We asked all the other moms what we should get for breakfast and they said to get all the sugary cereals they never buy at home….15 boxes of sugary cereal = a whole buncha happy kids!}

{Lake Time!}

{Mr. Ross doing what he loves best…}

{We took turns making meals for everyone}

{It takes a LOT to feed this crowd!!}

{Sweet girls}

{S’mores and Woof’ems}

Seriously what an awesome weekend.  Can’t wait to show you more of what we’ve been up to this week with Brave Girl Camp…we wish each one of you could be up here with us!!!

xoxo

12 Minutes.

Today, just like everyday, I was highly anticipating naptime. Once both kids were down, I went straight to my computer to edit some photos. After about 15 minutes of quiet went by, I heard my 1 year old rustling and fussing in her bed. I tried to ignore it, hoping she would fall back asleep, but no such luck. I got her bottle and huffed into her room thinking, “This is my ONLY time…how dare you interrupt it!” I was hoping that a drink of milk and a 2 minute cuddle would do the trick so I could get back to my quiet time.

She drank a little bit of the bottle, then pushed it away. She looked up at me and gave me a big smile, then she started humming (she is my little music lover). So I hummed back at her and she giggled. She kept putting her hands up to my mouth so that I would kiss them. She did it over and over again and thought it was more funny each time. We hummed, we gave loves and kisses….and I was able to take a second and really realize how beautiful her eyes are. I wondered what she would look like when she got older. In that moment of quiet, I realized how much I adore her…and that I want her to be happy forever. Then, I laid her back in bed and she feel asleep.

When I came out of her room, I looked at the clock and realized that only 12 minutes had gone by. 12.  If I would have been on my computer, I would have edited 1…maybe 2 pictures. Big deal. What’s 12 minutes?

Today it was a sweet little moment with my baby…
Tomorrow maybe it will be telling stories with my 3 year old…
Or snuggling my husband…
Or making a really yummy hot breakfast for my family…
Or calling to talk to a friend…
Or going outside with my kids…
Or making someone feel EXTRA special…
Or painting my toenails…
I feel like I get so caught up in my “to-do” list and don’t give enough time to my “to-enjoy” list. Today I learned that 12 minutes isn’t much…but taking a a few minutes out of our non-stop busy lives to LOVE, FEEL, LISTEN & ENJOY feels really, really good.

{Note:  We don’t usually get to hear much from Chelsea, but she is a HUGE part of Brave Girls Club!!  She has streamlined SO many things at Brave Girl Camp – and we don’t know what we would do without all the work she does to get us ready to go – all the schedules, menus, instructions for food preparation, cabin set up, etc, etc, etc.  We seriously live and die by her organized notes and schedules.  Before she does any of THAT incredible stuff, she is an amazing wife and mother of three adorable kids ages 4, 2 and 6 months.  She actually wrote this blog post last year, and it got lost somewhere in the archives before it was published.  We found it today and it is just too great not to share even though the sweet little 1-year-old darling she is talking about is now 2 (and an absolute JOY to all of us).}

HAPPY 4th of JULY! …and a new series…

First things first – HAPPY 4th of JULY to all of our Brave Girls!!  4th of July is a pretty big deal in our family.  For years and years and YEARS we’ve spent the day gathered as a family in our hometown of Melba, Idaho.  It’s a small town that celebrates right!  Festivities include an old town parade in the morning, carnival and art fair in the afternoon and the most incredible firework show at night.  The best part about the day is getting together with our entire extended family…well…most of them.  (Some live far away and don’t make it every year…we LOVE when they do!!)

Which brings me to my second thought – our new series called “did you know…” where we’ll tell you all kinds of fun and funny things about us and the people who are closest to us.  Soooo…

DID YOU KNOW THAT

Kathy and Melody are 2 of 9 children?!

(5 boys…4 girls…Kathy is 2nd and Melody is 6th.)

Melody, Kathy and their 7 brothers and sisters have 41 kids between them ranging in age from 29-years-old to 3-month-old twins…Mike and Kathy (the 2 oldest) have grandbabies too, which adds to the numbers…6 grandkids with 2 more on the way.

That means when our family gets together, there are 18 brothers, sisters and spouses and 47 kids…plus grandma and grandpa!  Needless to say it’s hard to get together anywhere.  But when we do (usually outside, so there’s plenty of room for everyone) it is heaven on earth.  Everyone has a cousin or two to play with and laugh with…

Or an aunt to talk to…

Or an uncle to play football with…

Or somebody to just sit and enjoy the view with…

This enormous family has been built on sacrifice and love and commitment and loyalty with more sacrifice and love on top of it all.
It all started with these two -

And we’re all sooooooooooooooo glad it did!! :)
