Despite our hobbies like gambling, drinking, hanging out with friends, Netflix is one of the things that we resort to for some screen-time. Even if there is an opportunity for free slot games, nothing is better than sitting down to watch Netflix on weekends.
When talking about strong women, usually people will mention Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel. Yet again, the character of Captain Marvel is controversial as well. Being one of the unusually strong superpowers women, some Marvel fans are comparing whether Captain Marvel’s powers are stronger than Thor. Let’s put the mainstream films aside and back to reality. In this post, there are large numbers of women that should be in the spotlight. The woman’s character and portrayal are supposed to be looked up to. They have significant ways of living life and we should look into that.
First and foremost, let’s start with one of the most viewed series produced by Netflix itself, Queen’s Gambit. This is a mini-series starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the main character. Despite some of the controversy that Queen’s Gambit faced with the gender issues, Queen’s Gambit portrayed some qualities that heightens women’s issues.
Women always fight for their place. Look, non-binaries fight for their place too. However, in the case of women, we have to fight for our spots to fit in somewhere since the beginning of time. Where do women belong? Kitchen, some said. These narrow-minded people still exist until now. In Queen’s Gambit, this young girl tries to fit into an orphanage. Then, as she got older, she struggled to be one of the greatest chess players in the world.
Thoughts On Queen’s Gambit
An interview with Grandmaster Magnus Carles has been executed regarding his thoughts on Queen’s Gambit. According to Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, “Chess has not been so kind to women.” What Grandmaster Magnus is talking about is that there are not many differences between women and men when learning about chess at a younger age. On the other hand, as they get older, people perceive men as more successful chess players rather than women. To be in that shell and to perceive that those perceptions are wrong is not easy.
Don’t you think that Queen’s Gambit feels empowering? That is because we rarely see such powerful women on screen. It is a sad reality. In a modern-day world today, women’s rights have been progressing. We have the right to work, vote, yes, but really is it that only? We fight for our spots every single day. Really and truly, women are fighters. There are some downsides to the story such as Beth Harmon did not experience sexism. However, it is still showing some women empowerment.
This heartwarming series that shows the family of Prichett should be on the list. This sitcom featured the character of Gloria Delgado-Prichett played by Sofia Vergara.
Gloria is known for her feisty personality, driving the next-door neighbour’s dog crazy with her high-pitched voice and someone who scares several drivers into pulling over because her voice reached a pitch akin to the police or ambulance siren. She frequently argues with Claire, another powerful girl in her family, due to her fiery nature. Being a Latina, she frequently believes that her race is a source of conflict with others. It is unimaginable how a girl living in minorities faces in her everyday life. Watching Gloria throughout this series, we can feel that sometimes she does not deserve the harsh continuous words from her environment.
Thoughts on Modern Family- Gloria
Throughout the series, she faces constant harassment of her accent, her heritage and how she acts. However, Gloria is still proud of her heritage and accent. Then, her family made fun of the ‘girly’ acts and behaviour. Even Claire, her own family member, made fun of her feminine side. The way she walks and what clothes she wears become the talk. This shows that discrimination and oppression can come from fellow women as well. We were supposed to be lifting each other up, not bringing each other down.
Grace and Frankie
The media’s lack of representation of young females is not as much as older women. Older women arent as celebrated in on-screen representation compared to pornography just wait till you’re older and vanish. Women over “childbearing” or menopause age are let out to dry, rather than being treated like great wine that improves with age and maturity.
Thoughts on Grace and Frankie
History and on-screen representation did not understand how much damage they’ve done to the next generation since Netflix episodes are so cluttered with unrealistic “strong” female and courage-less male tropes. The old white males are usually the first to be cast. We get it, Netflix: you dislike baby boomers and their antiquated ideal. However, those aren’t stereotype-related concerns; they’re simply human nature from another era. Seriously, please consider viewers’ perceptions as well. Women deserve more recognition and on-screen time for what we are; not as male-gaze tools.
Three TV shows broadcasted on the Netflix platform have shown varieties of women empowerment and how they went through it. It shows that women still face challenges that sometimes men don’t want to acknowledge. Women aren’t craving for acknowledgement, all we ask for is to be treated with respect. Luckily, we are progressing into better days ahead.
